Overview main search stories Internet News

By gwen.harris @sympatico.ca Internet News"Changes at the major search engines and subject directories.

The main competitors continue to be Google, Yahoo and MSN with Ask Jeeves and Amazon making strong showings with new and interesting features. There are several others in the wings.

- Google has been hiring staff and there are rumours that it will be releasing its own browser and building a new database."

I asked: Do the site log files show anything similar to the forum posts reporting increased Google bot activity and/or a new Google bot?

Various SEO forums are exhibiting a flurry of posts similar to the old Google Update Syndrome.

Worryingly the favourite speculation at the moment is that Google is gunning for big sites with 1,000's of pages with similar content and for those using cloaking. As ever speculation is rife and evidence thin so any current info from totaltravel logs may prove crucial if Google SERPs and traffic change.

"- Yahoo has made its new search engine more stable but also seems to be sidelining the directory. Most effort was probably going into the revisions at MyYahoo. There are also some new shortcuts, mainly of interest to people in the US."
I also note that YAhoo has a beta version of HP now online..

"- Ask Jeeves has almost doubled its database and has been adding personal research features. The new MyJeeves makes saving results easy. Take the tour at ask.com.

- Amazon's A9 has added content and more personalization for saving searches and results."
